People love guarantees. Almost every product offered on daily infomercials offers a “money-back guarantee” even if the product is fully-used and the bottle returned empty.
But suppose the company offering the money-back guarantee has no ties to the manufacturer which makes the product. How can it reasonably, and ethically, make that promise? That, in a nutshell, is the problem faced by SEO firms which promise their customer’s consistently high SEO rankings.

Even Google, the world’s number 1 search engine, warns that “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” (Source: Google’s Guidelines on Search Engine Optimization)

There are many reasons for this. Chief among them is that it is impossible (and unethical) to guarantee a result for a process you can’t control. Only the search engines themselves control the algorithms used to rank web pages. Not only are these algorithms a complicated mix of keywords, inbound links, outbound links and other items, but they change over time. An SEO firm guaranteeing a specific search engine ranking is like Coca Cola guaranteeing the quality of a Pepsi product. It just doesn’t have the business intelligence (or right) to do that.

In addition, how a web site ranks on any particular search engine is partially based on the visitor’s own web search history. For example, if I perform a web search on my computer and then perform the same search on my friend’s computer, I will get different results. There are also geographic components to the algorithms. That is why people get different results if they performs a search in one city, then the same search in a city a few hours down the road. I’ve even found different search results from the same query, from the same computer, after hitting “refresh” or rebooting my computer.

Suppose a miracle happens. A company actually comes up with a surefire way to truly guarantee consistently high search engine rankings for specific web sites from any location – time after time. That may not do your company any good. The only legitimate aims of an SEO campaign are to increase traffic (visitors) to a website, and having those visitors perform a desired action (such as making a purchase or completing a contact form). That requires more than just a high search engine ranking. It also requires compelling content, ease of navigation and a quality product, among other things.

A truly great SEO campaign doesn’t measure ranking, but rather site traffic and conversions. An internet marketing firm that promises a guaranteed SEO rank cannot be trusted. Instead, place your trust in a firm that has a proven history of helping its customers increase their web traffic and develop new clients, and can provide you with a list of satisfied clients.
